Shashi Tharoor
Shashi Tharoor,(born 9 March 1956 in London,UK) is an Indian politician, writer and former International diplomat. He has also been serving as a member of parliament, Lok Sabha from Thiruvananthapuram,Kerala since 2009.
He was also formerly under secretary general of the United Nations and contested for the post of Secretary-General in 2006. He also serves as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and all India Professionals Congress.He formerly served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs (2014 to 2019).As an author he also received the Sahitya Academy Award for his book ' An era of darkness ' in a non-fiction category in English language.
He was born in UK but was raised in India, his parents were originally from Kerala and lived in UK. His parents returned to India when he was 2 years old and completed his schooling from India.
Talking about Shashi Tharoor's education; he is graduated from St. Stephen's College, Delhi in 1975 and culminated his studies in 1978 with a doctorate in International Relations and Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. he was the youngest person at the time to receive a doctorate from the Fletcher School, he was only 22 years old that time. After obtaining his M.A. in 1976, Tharoor further obtained his Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy in 1977 and his PhD in International Relations and Affairs in 1978.While he was pursuing his doctorate, Tharoor was awarded the Robert B. Stewart Prize for best student and was also the first editor of the Fletcher Forum of International Affairs.
From 1978 to 2007, Shashi Tharoor was a career official at the United Nations, rising to the rank of Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information in 2001. He announced his retirement after finishing second in the 2006 US selection for U.S Secretary General to Ban Ki-Moon.
Besides so much of his achievements he also began his political career in 2009 by joining the Indian National Congress and guess what, he also succeeded in that field, he represented the Indian National Congress from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala in the Lok Sabha elections and won to become a member of the parliament. Despite it he also served as Minister of State for External Affairs (2009–2010) and Minister of Human Resource Development (2012–2014).Tharoor was a pioneer in using social media as an instrument of political interaction. He was India's most-followed politician on Twitter until 2013, when he was overtaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Some of his Twitter posts have proved controversial in the past and were highlighted negatively by the opposition and press.
Shashi Tharoor is also a renowned and acclaimed writer, he has written 19 books in total. He has also been a columnist in India's most
famous English newspapers. Tharoor started writing at the age of 6, his first published story appeared in the Sunday edition of The Free Press Journal, in Mumbai at the age of just 10. Each of his 19 books have been a bestseller in India. he has a great influence over Indians, and is always quoted for his observations. as once he said in a speech, " India is not, as people keep calling it, an underdeveloped country, but rather, in the context of its history and cultural heritage, a highly developed one in an advanced state of decay." and it grew very popular among Indians.
His most popular books include three non-fiction books, An Era Of Darkness (2016), Why I Am A Hindu(2018) and The Paradoxical Prime Minister(2018). In September 2019, he published a new book, The Hindu Way: An Introduction, in line with his research into Hindu culture and ways of life of late.His latest book, The New Word Disorder And the Indian Imperative, co-authored with Samir Saran, President of Observer Research Foundation (ORF), one of Asia's most influential think tanks, is a crucial study on the current state of chaos in international politics and identifies India's imminent role, as a non-hegemonic global power, in scripting an equitable ethic for a new international orders.
His Achievements-
- He was awarded the Robert B. Stewart Prize for best student and was also the first editor of the Fletcher Forum of International Affairs.
- He was the youngest person in the the history of the Fletcher School to receive a doctorate. He was just 22 when he got the degree of Doctorate from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
- He was the runner up in the 2007 elections for the post of Secretary General of the United Nations, having lost to current Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon.
- He was the most followed Indian politician on twitter before 2013 when he was surpassed by Mr Narendra Modi. Also he was the first Indian politician to complete 10,000 subscribers on twitter.
- In 2009, he was awarded with the Zakir Hussain Memorial " Pride of India " award.
- Mr. Tharoor was also recognized as the PETA's " Person of the Year ".
- He was given the Sahitya Akademi Award for his book An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India.
- He was honored with the Inspiration of the Year Award at GQ's Man of the Year Awards.
